My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: Virginia

I filed for unemployment when I lost my job stating I was laid off and began receiving benefits. My previous boss just recently found out and has decided to try and fight it. The issue stated on the paper work states the phone interview is whether or not you were discharged or suspended for misconduct.

I was told by my current manager he attempts to tell the judge that I never received my A+ certification and was not let go because it was slow and they were laying people off. There was no paper work signed by me the entire time I worked for the company. No paper work was signed saying I was required to get my certification by a certain date or that I was fired when they let me go. (The owner said he was letting me go. He did not use the words your fired.)

I was a loyal employee, came in on my days off when they needed me, worked extra hours and did a good job. I never received any documentation or ever signed any forms stating that I was in violation of misconduct. Everything the owner said was verbal.

Also, not sure if it helps, but the owner was verbally abusive to me all the time and insulting me and did not like me. I do have witness.

Any advice would be appreciated.
