    Default Border Patrol Hiring

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of:California

I applied online for border patrol. I answered every question honestly and one of them was have I used any substances in the past 0-12 months. Again I answered honestly and selected 0-12 months. At the end of the questionnaire it still said congratulations and gave me a test date to take my border patrol exam. What I did was dumb and I wish I'd never done it and I'm very happy to never do again to have a chance at a great career. Does anyone know that with the honest answer I gave them and the border patrol still allowing me to take the test mean I still have a chance to qualify for border patrol even though I wasn't clean in the past year?

You still have a chance. There are a great many factors involved...such as exactly how long it has been, what you used, how often you used. Where it will hurt you would be in the following hypothetical situation:

Say they have 1 opening left. You and another person both achieve the same score on the exam. The other person has never used, you have. The odds are going to favor the other person.

thx for the response. I really want this opportunity and would hate that some stupid past mistakes like that would ruin it. If anyone else has any info would really appreciate it.

I would also add to this that when filling out or answering questions pre-employment with the federal gov't full disclosure is always the best policy. It may sound counter intuitive but even when going through the process for a top secret clearance in the military it is always better to fully disclose issues. Honesty, integrity and in some job areas being 'blackmail proof' is what you need to display. Now obviously abusing controlled substances or booze is almost always a deal breaker. Experimentation with a controlled substance is something a huge percentage of people have done.

Anyhow, good luck and don't worry about this disclosure of yours your integrity has shown through and that is how you should view this not as someone who has made a bad mistake that may haunt you. You did the right thing and if you are disqualified through the process it is unlikely it will be solely for this admission.
