My question involves criminal law for the state of: North Carolina
I was at my friends house last Thursday and I slept there. I always have my wallet in my back pocket, and it's always filled with money. In this case, over $150. I left around 4 AM and went back to my house, and the next day I noticed it was missing. I looked everywhere, checked the car, and it wasn't anywhere. Long story short, one of my friends buddies stole my wallet and went out and bought drugs and food with it, and also shared the money with other people.
Yesterday I was at my friends house, and the kid shows up. I ask him where my wallet is and he plays the "I didn't take it" game. I ask twice more and then call the cops to report the robbery. Cops came, I told them what happened, but they left and said I could press charges.
The kid claims he left the wallet at my friends house after presumably spending all of the money and not needing the wallet anymore, but it was nowhere to be found. We checked his friends car, who was also involved, and all I found in her car was a hotel keycard I kept in my wallet.
How should I go about this? I would like to talk to his parents to settle things peacefully, but like EVERY kid who robs things, the parents are there to say they didn't, even though I have proof and witnesses. I would like to ask the parents to either pay me $300 dollars for everything, or take them to court, but I have no idea how that even works.
Thanks.
