Thank you LawResearcherMissy!

Sorry, my statement was not very clear. We are married in India itself - the ceremony was held there and the marriage is registered with local Indian authorities. I arrived in New York only a week ago on a L1 visa, while my wife has been studying in New York for a few years now. We haven't registered our marrige with US authorities yet - so in US we are still considered single, I assume.

In this case, may I ask a few more questions please.

1) With the above background, can we still get divorced or get dissolution in New York? We have a marriage certificate translated into English prepared by local Indian authorities. Also, I am assuming if either of the husband or wife has lived in New York for above a year, should be ok to file for divorce/dissolution, or do we need both husband and wife to have lived more than a year...?

2) Thanks for the advice on dissolution, it didn't occur to me, so appreciate it. What would be the difference between a dissolution and divorce - I assume divorce is used when both parties don't agree but dissolution is used when both parties agree on all terms? What are any other merits and demerits of each. My only concern is whether dissolution would be insufficient in any regards, in which case I might have to go for divorce to be on the safe side...? My another concern is I am not sure if these two are treated differently in other countries/India where I'd need to get the divorce/dissolution honored to settle/protect property rights.

3) I am relatively new to the US, would you give any pointers as to who should I seek for help to get the process done? Any relatively well-known and not-overly-expensive lawyers or law firms that you could recommend...?

4) How long does a divorce or a dissolution usually take?

Sorry to make it a long question - I very much appreciate your advice and help. Thank you.
