I thought it was illegal for employeers to ask carte blanche questions about your record. I also understood that it was not legal to ask criminal history questions if the conviction has nothing to do with the job being applied for. If this is the case, how can an employeer ask this question?
My situation: Convicted 13 years ago. In 2005, applied for and got the job (documentary film), THEN they asked the question. The ensuing "background check" took eight months (job was in the beltway). I was told I got the needed clearence, but have yet to work one hour for said company (it's been 13 months).
How do you determine what occupation you can have based on your charge?
If I've been convicted of a drug offense, how does that affect being an engineer or a teacher. I should ask: What job can an felon "qualify" for?
These days EVERYONE says, "It's a safety issue".
There is no hope for a meaningful life.
