Question Can Employer Fire a Telecommuter to Hire Somebody to Work In the Office

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Maryland

I was given a telecommuting position about a year ago so that I could further my education, and I had signed a contract agreeing to this position. Recently my supervisor (who signed the contract) passed away. Immediately following his passing I was told by the new supervisor that I may be fired within the next two months. This is not due to my job performance, in fact the supervisor reiterated what an amazing job I was doing and sung the praises of my performance. Instead I was told that I was being fired so that they could bring someone else in to work at the office. They then went on to tell me that the only way I would be able to keep my job would be for me to drop out of school and move back to the office (which is in an area I cannot afford as they have frozen raises for the past two years and there would be no cost of living wage increase.) The employees at the office would be able to maintain their work load if they weren't busy surfing the net all day and weren't best friends with the supervisor. If I am doing such a great job is it legal for them to fire me like this? Do I have any legal recourse at all?

There is nothing in the law that says as long as you're doing a great job, you can't be fired.

If the supervisor is saying what a great job you are doing...why not ask for a Letter of Recommendation?
