California: Shoplifting vs. Marijuana possession

Hi - I work at a boarding in school in California.

Over the weekend, we had two incidents with students that could be legal issues.

First, a student was caught in possession of a tiny amount of marijuana on campus. He did not smoke here (but he did at home the previous week). He is 14.

Second, a student shoplifted from a convenience store (but was not caught). She took several food items. She is 17.

From what I can tell, both are potentially misdemeanors in the eyes of the law. Is this accurate?

You might be wrong if you think he didn't smoke any at school, it sounds like she toked up with him and she got the munchies.

The odds that the boy has not smoked marijuana on campus seem pretty slim. But that's not really the issue.

Both offenses would likely be treated as misdemeanors.
