Arrow Paid Holiday and Sick Days Taken Out of My PTO

    State: California

Is this normal? My paid holidays gets deducted from my PTO earned. Also my sick days get deducted from my PTO, even though I do have sick days. Sick days don't get deducted until its the 4th consecutive sick day, but the first 3 days come from PTO.

It's slightly unusual, but it's by no means unheard of. And before you ask, it's quite legal.

It just sucks because I work 80 hours to earn 5 hours of PTO. Then suddenly a holiday comes along and the 5 hours I just earned + 3 hours I didn't have to begin with gets taken away.

And just to throw this in, my company takes the day before the holiday, the day of, and the day after the holiday off. So thats 3 days of my hard earned PTO.

PTO that is intended to cover holidays as well normally accrues at a rate which will allow the employee to cover paid holidays PLUS take a vacation of some description. 5 hours every two weeks is only 3.25 weeks total (and that assumes you never actually TAKE any time off or paid holidays) which, IMHO, is pretty chintzy for holidays PLUS vacation PLUS the first 3 days of an illness. If there are 10 holidays a year, and you get pretty sick just once, that's 13 days already, leaving just 26 hours for a vacation.

Everyone complains about the PTO here, how all the holidays just consumes all the PTOs we earn.

Obviously management doesn't care because they make enough to put a roof over their heads and food on the table x 5 or more.

Sometimes the only solution to a bad employer is another employer.
