Hello...I am contemplating a divorce to save my assets which are only in my name. They include a house (in my name only but acquired during the marriage), a joint bank account with me and my father (it's dad's money), and a future inheritance from my father.
Here is my dilemma. I have medical insurance but my husband does not. I can not afford to pay for both of us and he refuses to see the urgency of getting it for himself. One hospital stay or major illness could potentially cost us everything and he has a heart condition already! (yes I know...amazing!) We have gone over this a million times but he remains in his way of thinking.
We reside in the state of Connecticut and I don't know the law on spousal responsibility for medical debt. I believe we are required to "take care" of each other but since he has chosen to act foolishly about this matter, I do not want to lose everything because of it. My thoughts are that a divorce is the only way to protect my assets if he won't get medical insurance. We would plan to stay together, just unmarried. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
