Default Using a CD Audio Track as a Ring Tone

Is it legal to rip a track from a purchased CD, convert it to an MP3 file, and transfer it to my cell phone to use as a ringtone?

Well... I can make a much stronger case for it as a copyright violation than not. But I've never heard of anybody being caught or sued for having a bootleg ringtone.

dumb question, but if the comsumer uses the product they bought for thier own personal use (this case a ringtone), then would there be any type of infringement or copyright violation? i know lately this issue has gotten sticky, but seems a copyright is designed to prevent distribution and sale of material, not usage....

It's permissible to make a backup copy, but I know of no basis to make multiple copies of a copyrighted work for active use even if you have one properly licensed copy.
