Default What is the Penalty for Online Impersonation

My question involves criminal law for the state of: CA, FL

i know that its illegal to impersonate a person, or celebrity online, but only if you threatened another person, benefited in any way financially, defamation, or ruined their reputation. but what id you impersonated them online and were caught and they wanted to press charges, but you didn't commit any of those crimes like harassment and etc? could you still be charged and receive jail time?

Depends on what you did while pretending to be them.

    What did you do?

I'm asking for a friend - apparently they just talked to some of their friends and colleagues via e-mails they found online while searching for them. The root of the thing is though, if nothing was given to them that could benefit them in any way (ie; scandalous photos, money, information, or stuff that could be used against the person they were impersonating) that's no grounds for jail time, correct? Or at least think so. All I've read about online was if you did harm to the person or if you sold something to gain money then that, of course, is illegal.

That helps I guess. It's what we've dug up earlier. Seems like they might get in trouble, but I think since there was none of that harsh wrong doing involving fraud and stuff it shouldn't result in being locked up. Thanks.
