I recently divorced my wife in Tennessee, I am planning to move to Boston when I get the check for my portion of the equity in the house which she is keeping. Right now I am staying with friends near Philadelphia. She has refinanced the house and has the money. In the settlement I was given possesion of an old Mazda with 200,000 miles on it. The title was in her name and she signed it over to me. I towed the car to PA and am storing, not using it. My ex insists that car has to be registered and insured in order to prove it is in my possession and that until I do she can not send the settlement money. Right now I have no fixed address and even if I could register the car it would need a new catylitic converter to pass emmissions. The car needs work and is only valued at $500 so it would cost more than car is worth to register it in a state I don't even plan on staying. The TN tags are expired. Is it really nessassary to register and insure it now? Can she really withhold the settlement if I don't?
