My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Michigan
I started receiving SSDI in March of 2008 due to cancer. In July of 2009 I had a relapse and underwent major surgery and chemotherapy. I had Blue Cross insurance, however, they would not cover my pre-existing condition. I applied for Medicaid but my SSDI was too high for much coverage assistance. I worked with the hospital and doctors and received some debt relief. However, I have outstanding debts of over $12000. I am barely able to pay my mortgage, utilities, and ongoing medical supplies, let alone pay this debt. I received a letter from an attorney stating a lawsuit will commence 9/16. What can I do to protect myself from this? I heard somewhere that SSDI recipients could not be sued to debt collection - is that correct? Your advice will be greatly appreciated.
