    Default 3rd degree shoplifting offense

I was caught recently switching tags for items at a local Marshalls. I was taken to station, fingerprinted and pictured, then released with a summons. The office said I would just get a misdemeanor and a fine since this was my first offense. I have definitely learned my lesson and I am just an emotional wreck.

I recently hired a lawyer and plead not guilty, so we could negotiate reduced judgment. The first pretrial court date was pushed back til' later this month however, my lawyer told me that it has been taken from the municipal courts to the county courts and I may receive an indictment. I am so scared now. Does anyone know what this will mean. What should be the best choice of action to take. Will I be able to get a delayed disposition at all? Will I definitely get convicted? How much more severe are the penalties of a county court vs a municipal court. Why would they do that all of a sudden. Does it have anything to do with the fact that I initially plead not guilty.

Please offer me advice. Thank you.

Does anyone know if a convicted record has affected any other aspect of life? Ex: vacation, credit card rates, cell phones, applying to colleges, etc?

    Thank you

It sounds like you were involved in either a large-scale, repeated, or commercial thefts, which may have inspired the prosecutor to pursue a more serious criminal charge. Laws vary by state. Your lawyer can tell you of the potential penalties for the charges pending against you.
