My question involves potential criminal law for the state of CA.
Hello! Something weird happened yesterday, and now I’m a bit worried and hope someone can advise me please. I went grocery shopping yesterday and bought some fruits and vegetables, etc. I put the groceries in the passenger seat foot area, and the watermelon got sloshed a bit when the car got going so I thought I’d move it to the backseat box later on. I then drove across the street to an open-air type of produce market to have a look. I parked my car right next to the produce market; got out, went over to the passenger seat, took out all the groceries and dumped them in a backseat box that I always used for groceries shopping.
Since I was in a hurry I only browsed for about 10 minutes and decided to leave without buying anything. I got into the car and proceeded to back out, when I noticed a guy was trying to talk to me thru the car window. I rolled down the car window and he asked, “Can I see your receipt?” I was baffled and said, “Huh what receipt? I don’t have any receipt?!” He then kept on asking the same question a few more times, and also told me to get out of the car so that they didn’t have to call the police! It then hit me that he was suspecting me of shoplifting because of the groceries on the backseat.
And this is probably the stupid part - I could have gotten out of the car and explained everything. But I was quite annoyed because I didn’t buy those groceries from him why should I show him any receipt! By the way, I didn’t keep the grocery receipt anyway-it went into the trashcan right in front of the previous grocery store. So I told the guy,” I didn’t buy them from you why should I show you any receipt!” Then I proceeded to drive off. I’m worried now thinking about it because his parting shot was, “We got your license plate number!”
The car was licensed to me and my husband under our current address and my worries are what can they do to me? Should I file a police report now or consult a lawyer? Thanks in advance for any help!
