    Default Waste of Money?

I live in Oklahoma and am in the middle of the emancipation process. I have been self-supportive for over a year and will be turning 17 in July. I graduated from high school a year early and have plans to move to Texas to go to school. However, I am unable to provide my own medical care, sign a lease, etc. because I am a "minor." I have an appointment with my attorney tomorrow to begin paperwork, but I have already been told by businesses that even as an emancipated minor I cannot sign a lease, take out a loan in my name, or put a car title in my name because in these respects, I am still considered a minor. Are the people I am dealing with ignorant or is this true? And if so then does this mean all being emancipated really does is relieve my parents of resposibility? If I am declared an adult, does this mean not allowing me to enter a contract is age discrimination? Do banks and other businesses have to recognize my emancipation?

It's not unusual for businesses to decline to enter into a contract with a minor, even an emancipated minor, without at least an adult cosigner. You should discuss the benefits of emancipation (or lack thereof) with your lawyer at your meeting tomorrow.

You made some very inappropriate remarks on my problem with my child. Your remarks showed your age. I think you're just angry about your own problem so you lashed out at a a parent. I hope you went back and read my remarks to you. There must be a reason you're needing to be emancipated- and I'm betting you're not the nicest young man to your parents. One day you will be a a parent and you will see how hard it is when you love your child so much but you can't stop the train wreck right in front of you.
