I live in Oklahoma and am in the middle of the emancipation process. I have been self-supportive for over a year and will be turning 17 in July. I graduated from high school a year early and have plans to move to Texas to go to school. However, I am unable to provide my own medical care, sign a lease, etc. because I am a "minor." I have an appointment with my attorney tomorrow to begin paperwork, but I have already been told by businesses that even as an emancipated minor I cannot sign a lease, take out a loan in my name, or put a car title in my name because in these respects, I am still considered a minor. Are the people I am dealing with ignorant or is this true? And if so then does this mean all being emancipated really does is relieve my parents of resposibility? If I am declared an adult, does this mean not allowing me to enter a contract is age discrimination? Do banks and other businesses have to recognize my emancipation?
