Default How to Stop Phone Harassment

My question involves criminal law for the state of: DC, PA, VA

Hi. I am not sure if I am technically being harassed. So before I jump to conclusions, I thought perhaps I should ask a lawyer. Only thing is, I have never even been in a law office and don't have a lawyer. Can someone please advise me on what type of lawyer one would talk to about a potential phone/text harassment situation? I have gotten about 10 voicemails/texts recently from a former friend I do not want to interact with. I have not, however, told them outright to stop. I am a little bit scared because in one or two of the messages the person sounds angry. Perhaps instead of getting into a debate about whether this is harassment, I could just ask what type of lawyer handles this kind of thing. thanks for your help here.

Until you actually tell them "Hey, Bozo, stop contacting me, and don't contact me ever again!", there's no other action for you to take.

    Do that first.

If they continue, you can go to the police and file a report for the harassment, and go to court for a No Contact order.

If they STILL continue, you can get a referral to a general practice attorney in your area from the local Bar Association. The attorney can send a Cease and Desist letter. S/he can advise you further on harassment/stalking proceedings if that doesn't do the trick.

I would consider it foolish to pay an attorney to handle this when you haven't done something as simple as to say, "I do not wish to communicate with you, do not contact me again." Unless there is something in the content of the communications that is particularly offensive, 10 contacts hardly sounds like harrassment, especially when you have not simply informed the person that you are not interested in farther contact.
