    Default SSDI and Getting Married

Greetings, this is my first time posting. I am a 27 year old female who is currently receiving SSI. I have had a disability my entire life. In December I will start receiving SSDI as a beneficiary.

My question is simple. Will I lose part or all of my check if I get married? My boyfriend of four years works full time and has no disability whatsoever. He makes approx $1600/month.

I would call my local SSA office but I do not want to alert them of anything, esp if it is something that has not happened yet. I am only thinking about it and would love advice.

    Thank you in advance!

Since SSI is public assistance, it would be affected by your husband's income. It is a rather complex formula. SSI may even consider his income if you represent yourselves as being married even when you are not legally married.

SSDI based on your own earnings is not a public assistance program so your spouse's income makes no difference in your SSDI benefits.

Thank you so much Janke! The SSDI is through my dad's (he turns 65 this year, so I get 1/2 his benefits) do you think would I still be affected? Thank you for the reply!

You are getting benefits on your dad's record so marriage will probably terminate the SSDI benefits. Exception would be marrying another disabled adult child getting benefits on his parents' record.

Bottom line. Marriage will affect both benefits.

It makes a difference for SSI, but not for SSDI.
