Post Position Was Changed when Returned to Work

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: CALIFORNIA

I am just going through a difficult time right now. I have three major things that has happened to me within the month of August. I was a victim of fraud ($1890), the post office lost over a month's worth of my mail, and now this.

I was on maternity leave this year and recently returned to work to find that my boss was no longer there. My position has been bumped down! They keep telling me that the work that was done by my boss is still needing to be done but my work completely changed. Could I quit and draw unemployment until I find another job? I thought that people on maternity leave were covered by job security act or something like that?

Was your position changed because of your boss's leaving?

Yes... They kept telling me that her work still exists but if that's the case, why did they stick me in a job that I don't want to do?
