Default Changing Baby's Name to Father's Later On

My question involves name change laws in the State of: Mississippi
I'm due in august and the father and I aren't married and we're trying to decide what's best for the child. Who's last name should he take? We want to be married but cannot do so until we're both financially stable. My family feels that I should make it my last name until we get married and the father wants us to go ahead and make it his last name till we get married. What do you think is the best legal thing to do and why?

You can give your child any last name that you want to. You can call him Sherlock Watson Holmes, if that's what makes you happy, and it's perfectly legal.

Since you plan to marry anyway, why not give the child a hyphenated last name? Baby Mommy'sName-Daddy'sName? It would save you the hassle and cost of having to petition the courts for a legal change of name later on.
