Default Maximum Occupancy of Rented Home in Long Island

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York

I live in a 4 br house with a total of five unrelated people, including the landowner, with one person living in a converted garage.

I haven't had any luck getting a clear answer, but people tell me that more than 4 unrelated people living in the house, which is in a residential neighborhood in East Setauket in Long Island, is illegal.

Is this true? What are any possible ramifications if this is true?

    Thanks!

Check with the local housing authorities, or see what's in the municipal code.

If your rental is illegal, you should be able to escape your lease. What is it that you actually want to know?
