    Default Moving Out of State

I reside in Wisconsin but am currently homeless due to prior living conditions I had to move out of my apartment. And have been camping for the most part with the exceptions of storms in which case I stay at friends.

And yes I reported my moving out to social security as soon as it happened. My boyfriend presented an option to me of moving in with him in Minnesota temporarily until the house we plan on renting (back in Wisconsin) from his aunt is ready. You see his aunt still has loads of stuff to get out of the house before we can move in.

Now while I was hoping to just wait it out and continue camping until the house was ready it is starting to look like it may not be emptied before winter hits. Needless to say I can't be camping out in a tent when there's snow everywhere. So this is quite a dilemma for me.

The whole reason for camping was so I didn't have to move out of state while we are waiting for the house to be ready. I was up until recently under the impression that moving out of state would automatically discontinue benefits. But after reading some posts it sounds as if that's not necessarily the case so now I have some questions I hope someone here can answer.

Like a official answer to if I move to Minnesota will I lose all my benefits? Living in Wisconsin I currently receive 2 checks one in the amount of $674 and another of $179.77. From what I understand the $179.77 is a state supplement of some kind. My social worker didn't quite explain it to me so I don't fully understand.

Would I need to reapply for ssi benefits? I understand I would have to reapply for medicare and that I would probably not be able to get foodstamps living with someone.

I also understand moving in with someone will more then likely decrease my benefits but by how much? How much roughly would I get by just moving to Minnesota? I just would like a estimate so I may make a budget plan. And yes when we live together I will be paying for half of everything.

Also if I do move over to Minnesota when should I report it? The very day I move? Or should I call them up a few weeks beforehand to let them know on what exact date I will be moving on? I only ask because I read a few posts about people who got benefits cut to recoup costs since they didn't report it in a certain time frame and that caused them to get some overpay.

SSI is a federal program and the federal portion can be paid anywhere in the US. Each state decides if they want to add monthly payments to the federal benefit and if they want to have those payments administered by the Social Security Administration and included in the federal check or if they want to have the payment administered by another agency and have a separate check issued.

The reference above answers one question, but I didn't search out the elements of state supplementary payment requirements, just if they were administered by the Social Security Administration.

Neither Wisconsin nor Minnesota have a state supplement payment administered by the federal government. So you probably need to take your question to the agency that administers state supplement payments for SSI recipients. The social worker you referred to may know more about Minnesota. You may get a good answer from a teleservice rep at 1-800-772-1213 but it is their job to know a little bit about everything. They may not know every detail of state supps in 50 states. But you are not going to get an official answer here on a message board. You are going to get individual's personal experiences.

Your federal benefit can remain $674 even if you live with another as long as you are paying your pro-rata share of household expenses per the other link above.

I think you should avoid resonding to MsLaw above who seems to be trolling this free board for clients. Start with the Social Security Administration
