Default Renewing Green Card with Possible Deportation

    Ok heres my story.

I am currently 30 years old and was brought to the United States with my guardians at the age of 6 making my stay here around 24 years of my life. I am currently a permanent resident and have lived here the whole time ever since. At the age of 17 I was convicted of robbery (PC211) yet i was trialed as an adult i think because it was my birthday a few days later after the incident. Public defender told me i should take a deal and plead nolo contender and advised me that pleading nolo is not saying im guilty. So at the young age i took his word and took a deal for 3 year joint suspension. Served a little less then 1 year in jail and was released. After many years later, I took a trip to my motherland overseas to visit my sick grandmother and on my way back from the visit, I was held in a holding area in los angeles international airport. After 4 hours of sitting in the holding area i was called in and given a court date and told me that my green card and passport will be withheld until i show up to court.

When it was time to go to court i spoke with an attorney and he advised me that i should stay outside while he goes in for me. So I took his advise and sat outside. 10 minutes or so later he comes out and tells me that he was unable to get my green card and passport back. Yet that he had great news. News being I will not be deported. Yet he tells me I should not travel for a while. I felt he gave me mixed messages and left me a bit confused.

A few years passed by and I realized that my renewal for my green card was approaching so I called the same attorney to ask if it is safe to do so. He told me he will look into my matter and call me back. Then he advises me that I should not renew because it could speed up a possible deportation. Now i am completely confused on what i should do. I spoke with a few other immigration attorneys and they all tell me different things.

Has anyone ever been in a similar situation as me? Is it true that you do not have to renew your green card if your card was issued before 1988? Is there a way to find out if there is a pending deportation case on you somehow without accelerating the process? If you have a pending ins case on you does the INS ever contact you regarding your case from time to time?

You are getting advice from lawyers who are familiar with the details of your case. Shopping around for opinions with other lawyers, having given full background information to those lawyers, is one thing; posting in an online bulletin board in the hope of hearing what you want to hear is another. Nobody here is in a position to second-guess your lawyer.
