I got caught shoplifting with a friend at Kohl's in Michigan. We left the building and this woman came running out and asked us if we forgot to pay for anything. She took us to a security room with cameras. My friend and I are both sixteen, so we are minors. This was our first time getting caught. My friend took $40ish worth of stuff and i had around $70. They filled out papers, called the police, and our parents had to come and get us. They told us that we were banned from any Kohl's for life. They also mentioned we'd have to pay around $175 fine, go to court, do a disciplinary program, and maybe community service. They said our punishment was up to the judge. They also said we'd get a postcard in the mail in 4-6 weeks, telling us the date of the trial.
Do we have to hire a lawyer/attorney? And what is the worst punishment we can recieve? Do our parents have to come with us to the court? Is our trial going to be together, since we were caught together on the same day for the same crime, or will they be separate?
Help ussss,
Thanks.
