My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
Hi, I am really freaking out because I switched the price tag at TJ max today. I walked away but I think that the cashier noticed . I came back later that day, but my item was not displayed. Can the store still go after me? I paid with a debit card. I learned my lesson.PLease help me
    Thank you

They CAN, but no one here can tell you if they WILL.

We also can't tell you how common or uncommon it is for stores to pursue a single instance of price switching, or how likely it is for that store to do so.

Stop switching tags, and stay out of that store.

And I would also like to add that tag switching is one of the more dangerous types of shoplifting in terms of being caught. When the clerk scans the item, it shows the real price and even if he/she lowers that amount, there is always chance he/she will get suspicious that the tag has been switched. As a result, the LPs may review tapes and catch the tag switcher.

I know that many people don't think that tag switching is as serious as actually carrying out an item in a purse, but it is the same as shoplifting. And getting caught for it is probably easier, because someone has a reason to go back and review those tapes.

It is good that you learnt your lesson. Just stay away from that store.

Generally, chances of being caught days, weeks or months after the shoplifting are usually low. While I don't have actual statistics, I reviewed most threads on this site and only saw a few cases in which shoplifters were caught/investigated days, weeks or months (rare) after the incident, especially for low-price items. I think that cases presented on this site are more or less representative of the general population of shoplifters, so I guess judging from the threads here, most shoplifters are caught on the spot. Reviewing current AND 6 month old tapes in the hopes of finding shoplifters would require stores to hire many more LPs, which costs money. Besides, there is always chance that DA will not accept those cases, being swamped as they are with current ones. But NONE of this means that shoplifters ALWAYS get away with past incidents of shoplifting. So just don't shoplift - it is as easy as that. Too bad, people come to this site after they shoplifted and not before.

    A little input:

If you are a regular customer at that store, and every transaction has a "oh, that rang up wrong" - as a cashier, I'd be casually mentioning this to LP....
