    Question Suggestion vs Automatic Stay

    Hi,
I've filed a Chapter 7 last Friday. My lawyer sent a "suggestion of the pendency of bankruptcy proceedings under chapter 7 of the bankruptcy code" to my employer to stop a civil garnishment. When I asked my employer when will the garnishment stop, my employers said "it depends, the notice is a suggestion". What does this mean? It was my impression that garnishments stop after filing.

I expect that is a notice of the stay, filed in state court with a copy served on your employer. The language is a bit archaic, but that sort of language lingers on in some jurisdictions. Have your lawyer contact your employer to clarify.
