Default Sued By My Ex-House Mate

I am being sued for $1500 by a former housemate of mine. I don't have any papers left but somebody showed up at my parents house and said he was trying to serve me. He told my parents it was a suit for $1500 and for rent.

This person is a drug addict and is addicted to marijuana. I moved into the house at the end of last August, with another person, and there was already somebody living in the house. We had an understanding that I could move any time because I had just graduated and was looking for a job. I never signed a lease, and my name wasn't on any utilities.

I found a job but was commuting because I had a new girlfriend. Then in February this person moved into the house. In April the heat was shut off for nonpayment. I told the other people in the house and the landlord that I was moving and paid rent up to the day I moved. I don't think I owe them anything. I can easily prove when I lived there and moved out, and what I paid.

When you get a copy of the lawsuit, you will learn exactly what is being claimed. That is the best time to seek help, because there's guesswork involved before that happens.

You state that you can easily prove when you lived in the home, and you apparently have witnesses or cancelled checks for your various payments. You should probably start collecting your receipts and contacting your witnesses, in anticipation of being served.

This is most likely a small claims case, given the amount involved.
