My question involves child support in the State of: Florida
My girlfriend after the birth of our son decided we were breaking up. I hadn't any forewarning, she just split with our son. I was unemployed, and she had more family resources to take care of him and I didn't push it in the courts because I wanted what was best for my son - not best for me or her necessarily. I lived without a father from age 5, and quite honestly it was difficult a couple times but overall I think the experience wasn't bad because my mom loved me enough.
Was it my son? I thought so. I signed the birth certificate. Do I think it was my son now? No idea. She acted very very strange from the moment she learned she was pregnant. We had dated for 4 years prior. I thought we were partners for life... she obviously didn't. anyway...
So I paid support for 3 years and then she started talking about moving to China or California - she wasn't sure which. I decided to stop the games altogether and move to Asia myself. I was, and my son was, being put through the ringer over the move... and this is her style - to screw everyone up and see what their reaction is...
I got a child support letter from the state just before I left. I didn't sign it, and figured I needed to do more for support to legally start through the state. Upon stopping at the US embassy in this foreign country to add pages to my passport I was told my passport was REVOKED because of unpaid support in FL totaling over $5,000 owed.
They handed the passport back, covered in red REVOKED stamps and with holes punched in it - front and back cover.
They said - you can get a temporary passport back to the USA, but I would not have a passport again - a good one, until I paid all arrears.
I said F that and didn't pay anything, nor did I (could I) leave the country I was in.
Fast forward 3 years and I owe about $55,000 in child support.
Brother at home in USA received a letter from FL department of child and family services saying - I can reapply for my FL drivers license because they are not enforcing the child support order anymore.
I thought - that's weird.
I called the US Embassy and they told me at first - a hold is still on my passport for unpaid child support. Then she said, Oh wait... No, no, it's been cleared.
I said, I can come and get a passport now?
She said yes...
Is this a trick by someone to get me to return to the USA???
Has anyone heard of child support enforcement being stopped altogether?
What if I return? Can they then restart enforcement and kill my new passport so I can't leave the country?
Problem is - I have a wife and daughter in Asia now - and my daughter is 9 months. I've had the most wonderful life watching her grow up... my wife and I are solid, 100%. So unlike the past relationship.
To me it sounds like a trick to get me back to the USA, re-start child support enforcement, and REVOKE my passport again, and get me to pay support in the USA under threat of jail.
Yes?
I've received no court order or anything... that things have changed... that paternity has changed... nothing.
I've tried to contact FL State and can't get SKYPE to work for 2 days. It will work eventually, but wanted to share this and see if anyone has a similar experience.
Anyone?
