My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
Hi, I was caught shoplifting for an amount of $9 dollars. I complied w/ store security, and after taking my information and the item, of course, they let me go. They said since this was my first offense, they weren't calling the police or anything. I have never, EVER done something like this before, and to be honest I have no clue as to why I did it in the first place.
I didn't sign anything, nor did they say anything about me receiving anything in the mail from them, etc. They even said I was welcome to come back and shop, though they did warn me that the ball was in my court, and if I did it again, anywhere, I would be arrested on the spot. And trust me, this will NEVER be happening again.
My question is, can I still be charged? And I know they put all of my information into some sort of retail theft database-- or at least they said they did. How long will my information be in that database, and can they track down my employer and inform them??
I will never, EVER do something this stupid ever again, but I'm so nervous that I could lose my job and not get another one over this one stupid thing. Thanks in advance for your help.
