Unhappy Caught Shoplifting in a Walmart

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan

Hi, I was caught shoplifting for an amount of $9 dollars. I complied w/ store security, and after taking my information and the item, of course, they let me go. They said since this was my first offense, they weren't calling the police or anything. I have never, EVER done something like this before, and to be honest I have no clue as to why I did it in the first place.

I didn't sign anything, nor did they say anything about me receiving anything in the mail from them, etc. They even said I was welcome to come back and shop, though they did warn me that the ball was in my court, and if I did it again, anywhere, I would be arrested on the spot. And trust me, this will NEVER be happening again.

My question is, can I still be charged? And I know they put all of my information into some sort of retail theft database-- or at least they said they did. How long will my information be in that database, and can they track down my employer and inform them??

I will never, EVER do something this stupid ever again, but I'm so nervous that I could lose my job and not get another one over this one stupid thing. Thanks in advance for your help.

    yes

,given the web as we know it; forever or until everybody's server crashes

and can they track down my employer and inform them??
    if they want, yes

Hopefully you are being honest. Personally, I do not believe you should worry about this. If they were going to prosecute, they most likely would have called the police at the time. You might receive a civil demand in the mail. That is basically a fine that the store can impose if they wish to. While many folks say walmart does not fight for the civil demand, the point is; they can. So, due to that, it is the simplest thing to do and just pay it if they make one.

Oh, god, I'm so being honest. I'm so ashamed, and I feel horrible. When I told the guy this was the first and last time he was like "Yeah, I could tell".

I'll try not to worry about this, and you can bet if I get a civil demand I will pay it, no questions asked! I just wish I could go back in time and keep myself from taking the stupid thing. 9 bucks isn't worth all this worry!

You are absolutely right with that. The problem is; you can't unring the bell (you can't take your actions back).

Live and learn. It's all you can do now.
