    OK...so question/suggestion....

You know the venue the item came from.

If I was missing something, I'd be going to the last place I remembered using it.

Have you, or have you considered the following:
    - Flyer posted at the venue, and with the venues management? Found item, x date, call with description....
    - Place ad in local music publications...found item/date/venue/call with description...

If the venue is still open, it is not too late to contact them again and post that flyer....You could do the same in local music stores, as well....

Great idea at the time, but it is 6 years later. I'm sure the rightful owner has long forgot about this thing.

GuitarAllan81;435742] I even left a standing message on my band's website until the website was shut down over a year later.
yet you failed to do the one thing that was oh so important when those other means of locating the owner failed: contact the police and say "hey, I have this amp that somebody put in my car by accident and I cannot locate the owner. It's not mine so I surely have no right to keep it, especially for 6 years. You take it now so I'm not trying to figure out 6 years from now what to do with it."

I went upstairs and looked at the console last night- the bottom has been pretty scratched up and beat up, and the serial number sticker has been halfway destroyed.
that means it's half there. If somebody did report missing property and included the serial number, then it would match the half that is viewable on the equipment.

. At least by holding onto it, the owner would have a fair chance at getting it back.
by giving it to the police they would have the same chance and you wouldn't be here today wondering what to do with it.

Exactly why I said "MAY" be stolen. I figure if it has been reported as stolen, then it is stolen. Is this not accurate?
No, it's not accurate. While somebody may report it missing or suspected of being stolen, the facts of the case are what determines if it is stolen or simply misplaced.

Does it matter if someone put it in my car because it looked like my other equipment? If the police saw it, wouldn't they still consider it stolen property? If the true owner thought it was stolen and reported it, what else would make it "stolen"?
Stolen means somebody removed it from the owners control with intent of removing it from the owners control. If there was no intent to steal, it isn't stolen.

I'm not concerned with my own actions, because I know my intentions and the situation. My only concern was with the legal side of things, where the police might view the property as stolen.
Well, I will tell you it will look a lot worse if you try to sell it rather than hand it over to them now. If you simply try to sell it, then you are actually committing a crime. If you give it to the police now, at least your story would make a little sense.

Hmm. Well at least it would get it off my shelf. Since I can't give the serial number to the manufacturer, this may be the only option.
It's better than being arrested for selling improperly acquired property. Your explanation at that point isn't going to mean much.
