Default First Time Marijuana Possession in Maryland

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maryland

    Hello,

Yesterday a police officer pulled me over after tailing me for a few minutes. He says I was going 45 in a 25 mph zone in a rural area about a half mile from my home. He came to my window and asked if I had anything he needed to know about in the car. I said yes, and pointed to my arm rest compartment where I had appox. 2 grams of marijuana in a plastic bag. I was completely compliant and he arrested me taking my car keys, cell phone, and wallet and leaving my car where it was on the side of the road. On the way to the station he said it was possible to get the charges reduced or dropped if I "work with him". I am not sure what this means. I was released the previous month from the local ER and mental ward for an attempted suicide (I know, OK?) and I am really not trying to become an "agent" or a rat for the police if it just puts me in the midst of the drug game. My criminal history is limited to a possession of alcohol while under age (age 17, 5 years ago).

My primary inquiry is this: I know the maximum sentence is 1yr/$1000, but what is typical for a first time charge with a minuscule amount of weed? I would be totally open to taking some kind of classes or being regularly drug tested as I think it could only benefit my health. Is this common?

Secondly: I was planning on getting a job. Just how much does this screw me over in terms of a job hunt? Am I going to be screwed at age 28 for having two grams of marijuana at age 23? Thanks for any help!

Unless you comport yourself like a complete jackass in court - people do sometimes lose their minds - your most likely outcome is going to be fines, probation, maybe an anti-drug class, and the judge will probably tell you to stop smoking dope.

Not usually. It really depends on the employer - some don't want any criminal convictions at all, some just don't want felons. Generally, though, a single misdemeanor isn't enough to keep you unemployed.

    Thank you for the response!
