I work (or worked, lost my job over this) as a bartender at a local chain restaurant. Friday night, a girl came in you looked young, but not so yound as for it to unreasonable to think she was 21. I asked for her ID, which she gave me. In New Mexico underage licenses are vertical and have red print that states "under 21 until....". Her ID was vertical and stated "under 21 until 6/14/2009" (the date that night was 6/11/2010".

I admit that I barely glanced at her birthdate after that to see if it coincided. But everything appeared to be in order and I served her. Next thing I know I have a badge in my face and am receiving a citation for serving a minor

Considering the fact that I DID id her....and everything seemed legitimate, how liable am I?

the local authority has gotten in trouble for using altered licences before, but unfortunately I did not have the presence of mind to even attempt to see the ID a second time. I'm actually worried that should the ID need to be presented as evidence in court, they may not show the same ID i was shown. I don't mean to sound paranoid, but the local liquor authority has been caught doing shady things like that more than once....
