    The cop probably did you a favor by telling you to be quiet,lol. If you truly feel you did nothing wrong I honestly would just ingore the civil demand and see where it goes. Many people are gonna tell you to pay but you didn't nothing wrong. If you know people who steal don't go in to stores with them or just leave. The person her caught you off guard,I won't go near her then. It can be easy to get caught up in other peoples stupid choices.

    One question regarding this case. The original poster was threatened with a civil demand. However the California civil demand law (490.5) refers to a person who has "taken merchandise from a merchant's premises". There is no mention of acting as an accessory.
    Can a person be successfully sued by the merchant if he is only an accessory?
