Question Illinois 17-Year-Old Doesn't Live at Home Anymore, Not in School, No GED

My question involves child support in the State of: Illinois

I have a 17 year old child in the state of Illinois (I live in Indiana) who will be 18 in December, he dropped out of high school at 16 and went into Lincoln Challenge to get his GED, he failed to do so and is now living with his Aunt (not at home with his Mother and Step Father anymore), I am still paying child support to his Mother.

How do I go about getting this child support dropped? I spoke with someone in the child support office in Vermillion County and they said I have to hire an attorney to get it dropped, here in Indiana you just file an emancipation form 4 months after they graduate and the court will make a motion on it.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to provide.

You would generally wait until he turns 18 in December. Or, you can file to modify the order and start paying Aunty.

(in other words - you can't drop it just because he's no longer living with Mom).

In December I still would need to petition the court, the woman told me that child support just doesn't drop itself, so what is the procedure, forms, etc that I need to do this? Can it be done myself like it can be here in Indiana or is a lawyer required to get it dropped when he is 18?

Nope you can do this yourself

Call the court house (because I know not every county in Illinois has their forms online) where kiddo lives and the clerk can tell you which forms you need; then it's simply a matter of paying the filing fee and getting the modification based upon kiddo aging out.
