    Unhappy Email Impersonation at Work

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

    Hello,
English is not my first language, so please understand.
I am working in a company and someone made up a fake email trying to report that i am having improper relationship with one of our officer. The email has been sent to a lot of people include all the managers. It has a big impact.
I am trying to explain to the company but it doesn't help that much.I do not want to lose the job and also don't want to make it worse by report to the police.

    So here is my question,

Can this case become a lawsuit?
Is there anyway for me to track who is the real email sender by IP address?
What type of evidence do i need? Is there a way to get it?
Can the sender get in to jail by doing this?

    Please help

Default Re: Email Impersonation at Work

Why would an anonymous email have a "big impact"? Haven't both you and the other co-worker denied the relationship? Is there actual evidence suggesting that you're having a relationship, such that your denials are viewed skeptically?

Should we assume that your workplace has a policy against relationships between co-workers?

Do you have any way to determine who composed the anonymous email? If not, you won't know who to sue. An IP address is helpful, but may not provide any useful information - for example, anybody can go to a wireless hot spot, or a public terminal at a hotel, university or library, and send email from their computer. At the same time, some IP's can be tied to a specific user's account.

I would expect the police to tell you that this is a civil matter, not something that would result in criminal charges or prosecution.
