Default Caught Shoplifting at Target, Police Were Not Called

My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey

I got caught shoplifting in my local target a little over a month ago. They didn't call the cops, but they took all my information, and said they would be sending me a bill. I have not yet received anything of the sort. The guy's tone of voice also sounded a bit like he was just trying to scare me, but I'm not sure. Is it possible the guy was trying to scare me because it was my first offense? He kept trying to hell me that he realized I was a smart guy and he can't understand why I did it, and stuff of that nature. Which further leads me to believe he was just trying to scare me.

He said the bill should show up this month (June), but it was in early May, before most billing information has even been submitted for the month. Is it possible that he really was just trying to scare me, or should I be on the lookout for a bill

This is also important because I'm 19 and still live with my parents, who would probably physically murder me if they found out about this, so I want to know if I have to constantly screen my mail, or if I should relax a bit. I've also gotten no phone calls for legal advice or anything like I've heard many people talking about. The guy also told me he saw how scared I was of my parents, and said he wouldn't call my house phone, or even my phone, he just needed the numbers on record. I also signed a document admitting that I stole (or rather, attempted to steal) the goods.

    Any ideas?

EDIT: I would also like to know this was my first offense, so that may also make the guy have just been trying to scare the crap outta me.

Target is good about following through with civil demand. Chances are you will be getting a bill in the mail. Watch for it and make sure it's paid. Your an adult so it will have your information on the letter.

Alright then. Do you have any suggestions as to what I could tell my parents if they see the letter in the mail (but don't open it, which they are liable to do, and it royally pisses me off when they do) they'll keep asking and asking what it is, and I can't exactly tell them what it is.

Best to be honest with them. It may come addressed as from Target, some people here have said theirs came from a law office.

And aren't they going to wonder when you are suddenly hauling ass out to the mail box every day?

Or you could tell them it's against Federal Law to open someone elses mail...but I have a feeling that would just start a huge fight.....

Probably would start a huge fight. I mean, if they find it, I'd just say my friend jacked it and I was with him, and I had a job, he didn't, so I offered to help him pay, so it's just half his fees. Also, they don't really wonder about shit when I haunt the mailbox

You know what you're parents will say?
    Look...I had overprotective grandparents.

    Expect this:

"Your friend stole? You are never to see that friend again....".

"Your friend needs money? Never a borrower nor a lender be....you better not lend him money...."

Look. It will be a bigger fight later when they find out. And they can. Does your local newspaper publish stuff about "so and so was caught...". And what about when they ask you to stop at Target and pick up something - what will your excuse be....

Look. Your asking our advice? My advice is to Be Honest. If you don't want to tell your parents don't tell them your an adult. But if they ask don't lie to them. Tell them you made a mistake and your paying for it.
