My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey
I got caught shoplifting in my local target a little over a month ago. They didn't call the cops, but they took all my information, and said they would be sending me a bill. I have not yet received anything of the sort. The guy's tone of voice also sounded a bit like he was just trying to scare me, but I'm not sure. Is it possible the guy was trying to scare me because it was my first offense? He kept trying to hell me that he realized I was a smart guy and he can't understand why I did it, and stuff of that nature. Which further leads me to believe he was just trying to scare me.
He said the bill should show up this month (June), but it was in early May, before most billing information has even been submitted for the month. Is it possible that he really was just trying to scare me, or should I be on the lookout for a bill
This is also important because I'm 19 and still live with my parents, who would probably physically murder me if they found out about this, so I want to know if I have to constantly screen my mail, or if I should relax a bit. I've also gotten no phone calls for legal advice or anything like I've heard many people talking about. The guy also told me he saw how scared I was of my parents, and said he wouldn't call my house phone, or even my phone, he just needed the numbers on record. I also signed a document admitting that I stole (or rather, attempted to steal) the goods.
Any ideas?
EDIT: I would also like to know this was my first offense, so that may also make the guy have just been trying to scare the crap outta me.
