I am currently unemployed and have a child. under what circumstances are civil demands reduced and how do I go about getting one reduced. Please help, I am a nervous wreck and dont want them to take me to court or keep sending notices. I got a $500 demand but only able to afford about $200.

The stores corporate or main office sets the standards for restitution, you can try contacting them to see if they will take what you can give. If they do accept the new terms, insist on getting something in writing BEFORE making your payment!! If they won't deal, I'd suggest getting some legal assistance, there are free programs to those who can't afford it. Tell the store, "Half of something is better than all of nothing."
