Default Car Repo by Finance Company for Not Picking Up Plate and Registration from Dealer

My question involves an auto loan or repossession in the State of: Florida

Not having the $600 for the plate and regristration and tried to save up for it.
The plate is sitting at the dealership,
and dmw website shows that the car is registered in my name.

The Finance company repod the car without any notice.
Was not behind on the car payment.

They want $700 for the tow plus fees
and next month car payment for a total of $1800

I owed money for the plate to the dealer and not to finance company (though both are owned by same people),
    was the repo illegal?

What does your financing contract say about obtaining and maintaining lawful registration? If, as I expect, it states that your failure to do so is a breach of your contract triggering their right to repossess, they can repossess.
