Default How to Get a Quick Expungement

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: North Carolina. I have just been charged with larceny for shoplifting. I'm only 17 and my court date is in a month. i have a scholarship and Im graduating in a week. Is there any way i can get these charges expunged soon enough so that they will not affect my college plans? please help its my first offense ever.

In North Carolina if you are 17 at the time the crime was committed you can have that record expunged. But, first you must have a conviction and then two years must have passed since the conviction. Looks like you want to have the record expunged before you even have a record. You've placed the cart way before the horse.

Expungement is a very long process that takes many months. There is no such thing as a "quick" expungement. Additionally, expungement in North Carolina is only available if you are found Not Guilty, or if the charge is dismissed.

Your case hasn't even been heard yet, so it's a bit premature to be asking about expungement.

If you have not already retained counsel, do so now. If you cannot afford private counsel, plead Not Guilty and ask for a Public Defender. An attorney may be able to help you get into a diversion program, which entails fines, restitution, anti-shoplifting classes, and probation. Typically, successful completion of the program results in having no criminal record.

Before the expungement process can even begin, you will have to have completed the circumstances and parameters of your sentence.

Typically, this will include fines, community service and a period of time on probation... usually at least a year.
