This is a question about Alabama.
I know 3 people about to move into a house together. They rent through the same rental place I do so I was confused by their story.
Two of the people are boyfriend/girlfriend and the third is a person about to start graduate school with them. When they found a place they all liked and wanted to sign a lease, the rental management place only wanted one person on the lease. The girlfriend was the one who initially called about the house so they want her on the lease. They're run her credit, etc.
She wanted to put her boyfriend and the other new student on the lease as well but the rental agency said "they didn't want a bunch of checks each month" and the 3 of them should draft up something to sign with each other.
It sounds to me that the rental place is telling her to sublet to her roommates.
Now, I rent through this place too with my boyfriend. We're both on the lease. They checked both of our credit, references, etc. We both write a check each month, put it in an envelope together and drop it off.
My friend who will be the only one on the lease is upset because she'd like everyone on it. If its an issue of multiple checks they've offered to only give them one check each month.
I know some places worry when renting to young people that they'll have to mediate roommate fights and disputes if there are multiple parties involved. The rental place hasn't said this directly but if its what they're thinking, does this make sense?
Is this common? Are their any laws dictating this sort of thing?
