Default Shoplifting at Meijers in Michigan

ok I live in Wayne County, I'm a 17 year old male and I got cought stealing an ankle brace at Meijers. It was $30. The guy wrote up a report and gave me a paper saying I have to pay $200.00(civil demand) because it's 10x the price of the stolen items. I have until june 15th to pay it. They did not call the police or give me a court date.
    I wanna know....

    1. Why is it 10x the price of the stolen item?
    2. What happends if I don't pay it by June 15th?
    3. Will I be put in a database just in case I steal from another store?
    4. Is it possible for them to forget about the civil demand?
    5. Is there any way I can pay less then $200?
    6. Is it possible for me to go to court for this?

I haven't verified it but most likely because that is what the law allows

    2. What happends if I don't pay it by June 15th?
they might sue you. They might turn it over to the police and ask for it to be prosecuted as a criminal case

    3. Will I be put in a database just in case I steal from another store?
I understand there is a national database. I do not know if Meijer's subscribes to it

    4. Is it possible for them to forget about the civil demand?
sure and it's possible BP will stop the oil flow in the gulf today.

    5. Is there any way I can pay less then $200?
not unless they are willing to reduce the amount.

    6. Is it possible for me to go to court for this?
    yes

    To add to it...

We've seen a few threads here where someone has not paid the Civil Demand. Then the next one arrived for double the amount. Then the third arrived....The store does have the option of suing you in court for the civil demand and their legal fees. Of course, they've been nice by not calling the cops and charging you in court...that could change.

Oh yeah...failure to pay also could screw up your credit report. While you may not think that's important...it is. Because many employers are looking at credit history. Your car insurance may offer a discount based on excellent credit rating. Oh...and when you go to buy a car, apply for a credit card, or rent an apartment....guess what? They look at your credit history.

So....paying that civil demand is looking very nice right now, isn't it?

Now...to answer another question. Why is it 10X the amount of the stolen item? Actually, it's less than 7 times. It's called "Damages". Each state has a law that states what amount can be collected. $200 is legal for Michigan. The store has to pay the LP people wages and benefits; those pretty cameras on the ceiling are not free....
