Default The Whole Process of Citizenship Application

    Hi all,

I'm still confused (and shaky) about the whole process of applying for my citizenship. I'm a rookie at paperwork and I would like everything to be smooth, fine and without any problems.

I received my green card based on marriage to a US citizen. My conditional 2-year green card was granted on 02/02/08. My 10 year green card (after 2 years I removed my conditional status) was granted to me on 02/05/10. Next year will be 3 years of staying in the marriage to the same US citizen. Been a good resident. No crimes, not even a single traffic ticket.

My question is, when can I start filing a petition for my citizenship? Is it 3 months before the date stated on my 10-year green card (02/05/2010) ? And how will the process go? Anyone with experience on this? Will the INS send you a letter telling you where to go to take an exam? Will you know right away you pass the exam in the same day? And will they send you a letter telling you where to go take an oath? Do you have to go through any more interviews with the INS agent and your spouse? And what is a priority date?

As you see I don't know anything about the process. So I'm very grateful if somebody could tell me what I should expect and how everything goes. Thank you.

What interview? An interview with INS agent? A month after your fingerprint or a month after you submitted the paperwork?
What about your CZ exam and oath?
    Thanks

yes, I received the interview letter one month after the finger print. I met the officer for interview for only 15 mins, he asked me total 5 questions out of 10. If you pass 5, means he did not need to ask you more, then , just write 2 sentences in English which he asked you to. all those thing are super easy for me. He gave me the paper which said I passed the test and told me I was put in the closest day for Oath since I told him that I need my passport ASAP for my work travel. he was so nice and I got my passport and certificate within one month. I guess I was the luckiest one

Yes you can apply for US citizenship on form N-400 3 months before your 3 year anniversary for getting your first green card. You will receive a fingerprint notice about 2 weeks to 1 month after filing your N-400. In Jacksonville, Fl anyway, the USCIS office will usually give you your interview within 3-4 months of filing. During the interview, the USCIS officer will go through the whole N-400 application with you, like your full name, address, if you are married (just to see if you speak english), when was the last time you travelled, your selective service registration (if relevant to you), if you have ever been arrested, etc. Then the USCIS immigration officer will give you the history and reading / writing test. It seems from your post that you can write English very well, so this should not be an issue for you.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that since you are applying based on your marriage to a US citizen, you should provide at the same time as filing the N-400 the same joint documents as before to show that you are still married in good faith. Also it is OK for your wife to join you at USCIS and she can remain in the waiting room while you do your interview. Just please note that a few officers may actually wish to speak with her and ask her questions about your marriage.
