    Default Handling of a Problem At Work

    Ok, I have an interesting situation at the place where I work.

    A couple of weeks ago, a posting was put up for a job on the AM shift (I currently work the PM shift). Myself and someone I called a very good friend (until recently) both applied for the job.

    This fellow has a female friend on the shift, and desired the job to be with his friend. I desired it for other reasons. Anyways, some time ago, this female worker worked on the PM shift with us, I thought she was a friend, we had a disagreement or two, but nothing that two adults couldn't solve.

    Once I saw her driving to a mutual friends house (only a block from my place) so I tailed her to say hello, never even got out of the car, nothing suggestive, just chit-chat, no more than 30 seconds. Another time I asked her to chill with me, nothing special, she was someone worth knowing. She got the impression that I was asking her out (I was not, but sometimes people get the wrong impression) and she used these basis to argue that my moving to the AM shift would make her uncomfortable.

    With this, this would make her friend the only available candidate for the job. . .perfect. But things took a turn for the worst for them, he was caught spreading rumours about me harassing this girl, and got suspended from work pending disciplinary action.

    I was asked to reply to her statement today, and as I read it, it was filled with blatent lies, telling of a time I followed her in my car through a weaving course for over 20 minutes, apparently I was talking derogatory behind her back and this offended her (although it never happened). And I pointed straight out that these were lies. She has been caught lying to supervisors before, and Human Resources told me that with the events of her friend and his suspension, and the fact her story was a little different every time she told it, they can't take her story for whats shes said. However, no official statements have been made other than I will be starting my new job on Monday, and my job is not at risk.

    My concern is that my name has been ruined in the place I work, the shift I am moving to is most certainly poisoned to her side. I have been at the place for about a year, earned "Associate of the Month", and truly showed that I am a great worker. I have heard people saying things about me as I walk by, and many people are giving me bad looks and stares as I walk by. Since the story hasn't been officially released by our HR department, I am not permitted to say anything to anyone.

    I feel I have been defamed at my place of work without reason, and I am incredibly uncomfortable moving into my new job on Monday. I have an open door to my HR department, what are my options to save face? Am I a victim here?

    Default Problems with Co-Worker

    It sounds like your employer has done everything it can to resolve the matter in your favor, and to keep the issues out of the workplace.

    If your co-workers lied about you, you may have a viable defamation action against them.
