    Lightbulb Star Naming

    Good day!

I got a present from my colleagues, a star with my name.

Quite cool, nice feeling, altough I know its kind a kidding. But anyway - the company (starregistry.com) says they are taking coordinates from Guide Star Catalogue - The Guide Star Catalog (GSC) is also known as the Hubble Space Telescope, Guide Catalog (HSTGC).

Ok then.. As i know, all scientific catalogues as protected with intellectual copyright, right? So - how can we interpret this - legal or not? Or anyone can take some coordinates from the open sources, compile them in its "own unique registry" and cheat people? And its all legally?

I expect that they say right on their marketing materials that the names they assign are for entertainment purposes, and aren't adopted by the scientific community. Scientific data is not subject to copyright, although its presentation may be.

Yeah, its exactly what they do. So, You mean - if they take coordinates from public catalogues, but not copying them all - its legal, huh?

coordinates are simply a representation of the location. It is a factual matter and not eligible for copyright. It would be the same as the latitude and longitude of some location on Earth. It is simply a fact.

How are they cheating people? They simply take a star listed by it's coordinates and give it your name in their records. There is no official acceptance of them naming the star and they tell that upfront.
