I disagree with that to an extent. You must be self-supporting, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't be getting free or discounted rent - but if you were to try to emancipate while in such an arrangement you should anticipate that you will have to convince the court that if the special arrangement ends you won't end up on the street due to your inability to afford rent at market rates.
It does remain possible that if somebody is giving you a free ride, the court could look at the situation and say "You're not self-supporting - your boyfriend's family is supporting you."
