The chances are pretty good that if they didn't stop her in the store that they did not catch the price switch (which is a form of theft) and won't face any criminal or civil problems as a result of it. There is no guarantee of that, however. What is likely is that if she keeps it up she will get caught and may face theft criminal charges. When that happens it's going to cost her a whole lot more than the $4.80 she saves off something like this. She might even end up spending a few hours or days in jail out of it. If she's smart, she won't do it again. Apart from that, at this point there really isn't anything she can do that will make this better.
Is there a statue of limitations? And if she does spend a few days in jail, is there care for elderly? I’m warning her about the consequences. I give her $500/month to help out with any expenses and I’m going to give her some more so hopefully, she doesn’t feel like she’s has to resort to theft.
