    Shoplifting Penalties in Vermont
I did one of the stupidest things of my life today and tried to take a $4.99 pair of earrings from a store. I was taken downstairs to fill out paper work but the police were never called. I was given a "no trespassing" order and told that I would be contacted by an attorney soon. I'm just wondering what kind of penalties I'm looking at. Will I have to go to court for this? I'm wondering because the amount of the item was so small.

No police...so you should simply be getting a Civil Demand in the mail.

The amount varies by state....I don't know the amounts by state...so plan $150-250 to play it safe. It may be less.

In Vermont you can expect a civil penalty of two times the retail price of the merchandise, to be not less than $25.00 and not more than $300.00.
