Emancipation in Ohio
I know of a girl who has been emancipated while I went to my old school...I'm sixteen now (soon to be 17), I've graduated from highschool in December, I currently hold three part time jobs, and can easily pay for all of my own stuff. My mother and I have been battling each other for the past 3 years....She suffers from chemical imbalences that cause her to be depressed/bipolar, and shes going into menapause...I currently live with my boyfriend, and we've been trying to get our lives on track, and we're going apartment searcing in a while. BUT my mother cant stand me, I cant stand her, but she refuses to support anything I do. I told her about the emancipation thing, and she said that if I could get some information on it, she would do it, because it sounded like the solution to both of our problems.
The only thing is, it seems like there is NO emancipation law in Ohio? I've checked several websites, and they all say that same thing, but a few state that if you have graduated from high school, that you can legally become emancipated? If anyone could give me some ligitimate information, that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Emancipation in Ohio
A minor can emancipate in Ohio through lawful marriage or active duty service in the armed forces. If either marriage or military service ends before the minor's 18th birthday, the minor reverts to the custody of his or her parents.

Re: Emancipation in Ohio
So pretty much, my parents won't let me get a job, and they won't let me out of the house. They both have mental issues, and they make me live in a 2 bedroom apartment, with my sisters creepy boyfriend, my sister, her two kids, and my parents. That is seven people in a 2 bedroom apartment...My sister has beat me up on numerous occasions and my parents wouldn't let me call the police. My father has beat me up, and my mother is mentally abusive. I need to get out, but I can't get married, because you need a parent to sign for you to get married, and you need a parent to sign for you to go into the armed forces, so pretty much I'm stuck?

Consider discussing your situation with a guidance counselor at school.

Re: Emancipation in Ohio
Yeah, but if my parents found out that I did that, they would flip!! I don't want to be removed from my home, and then something happens, like I go to court, and they tell me I have to stay at home, it would get 100 times worse. My whole family is against me. They already told me they would make sure I wouldn't win in court. I know it sounds hard to believe, that my WHOLE family is against me, but the only person who is on my side, doesn't want to get involved because they live in a different state just to get away from the family. I'm just fed up with their actions and words towards me and I want a way out and I can't seem to find one.

Re: Emancipation in Ohio
Wow,
Some of this stuff seems alot similar to what is going on with me, my girlfriend, and her family. The way peoples families treat them. I think family morals are at an all time low, but yet at an all time high. I have a few questions but they may be more appropriatly addressed through another thread.
