My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Washington
I'm just weeks away from 17. I would like to file for emancipation but thought I should check in and see just how hard it might be. I work a steady job as a Marketing Director for a company near my current residence. I make around $15-20k a year on average, I'm a running start student, taking online courses at the nearby community college and am in decent standing. I have my drivers license, and am mentally capable of handling my own personal affairs. I highly doubt my parents would support my decision to become emancipated, and was wondering what would constitute the granting of emancipated status to myself even under the circumstances that my parents object... How can I prove denial of emancipation would harm me? My mom is a stay at home mom, and my dad works in Seattle. I barely ever see them, due to a busy schedule and a dedicated boyfriend. But, when I do make the effort to see them, they treat me like trash! I was adopted shortly after birth, and have always been independent. I handle all my own banking matters, have my own debit card and checking account, multiple savings accounts, and handle them quite well. Lately I've been kind of short on cash due to trying to pay off my car (in debt to my parents) but I've been making all my payments. I believe emancipation would benefit me in the sense that I could finalize and sign off on all my own agreements. I would no longer have to go to my parents for petty things, just to wait for their approval. Multiple times I've had to reschedule things or try and work my way into things because my parents delay signing something for the college and my registration gets pushed, cancelled, etc. - or something of that sort.
My boyfriend is 19, and yes in the long run I would be living with him. But, for the time being, I've been looking into apartments and such in my area and have found them at rates where I could afford them, living on my own. I am a costco member (under my boss' account/membership) and do all my shopping there, I currently pay my parents for my car/car insurance/phone service, AND I pay my boss for the costco membership as well as an additional phone line (for work and such). I pay for all my school fees/books/everything. So financially I think I'm safe, everything would just be in MY name, saving others lots of hassle.
Sorry, didn't mean to make this too lengthy.
Any advice? Help?
Any and all comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated - positive or negative!
Thanks in advance everyone!!! (=
