Emancipation in the State of Colorado
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Colorado
I'm fifteen years old ( 16 in little more than a month) and have lived in Colorado all my life. My grandma has lived with us a little over a year now and it has braught a great deal of stress on us all. Fact is she is dieing, slowly. My dad takes out his stress from his mom dieing and his work on my family, not physically but mentally. My dad use to be abusive twoards my brother (who is 22 now) and has hit me once - the cops were called but nothing was made of it because I had left the scene with my brother. He is constantly screaming and taking his anger out on me and my family. I have close to straight A's and both of my parents treat me like I am a bad child and constantly make me feel horable about myself. They are perfectionist and nothing is ever good enough for them - I feel like this is taking a toll on me physically and mentally. I have been feeling the need to get emancipated sens I was about 14 and it has finally gotten to the point where I would really like to make it happen. Fact is there is always yelling going on in my family and always someone complaining about the other, it makes me feel constantly depressed. I have a few jobs lined up but the only thing holding me back is I need to be able to drive, I will be getting my liscence on the last day of July. I have been looking for other jobs and I am currently looking at one where I could make $100 a week, if I take this job it will be pretty much garuteed. I have a few places I could live, one with my brother and one with my boyfriend (in his parents house) they have invited me to live with them but I still think of getting my own place. What are the chances that I could succesfully become emanciapated in the state of Colorado?
Marriage is an option if it would help me get emanciapted.
Re: Emancipation in the State of Colorado
You will not be emancipated based upon what you've said.
Please, take some time to read the "sticky" posts in this forum.
Do you really expect to be fully supporting yourself on $100/week?
Really?

Only if your parents consent.
Getting married at 16? Is STUPID.
Finish school so you can at least spell decently, and possibly get a grasp of how much fully supporting yourself is actually going to cost you.
Re: Emancipation in the State of Colorado
The state of Colorado does not have a statute for emancipating a minor.
The state might agree to recognize you as emancipated IF you are FULLY supporting yourself. However, living with someone else is not fully supporting yourself, and you are far too immature to be living on your own if you honestly think you can support yourself fully on $100 a week.
I do not see emancipation in your future.
Re: Emancipation in the State of Colorado
Do a budget:
$400/wk
Subtract Uncle Sams share of 28%.
Add up these expenses:
- Rent for your apartment.
- Renters Insurance
- Utilities that are not included.
- Food
- Staples (toilet paper, shampoo, soap, deodorant, cosmetics, hairspray)
- You mentioned you will have a car:
- Car payment
- Car Insurance
- Maintenance (Gas, oil changes, etc)
Possible additions:
- Cell Phone or LandLine
- Cable
You want to have money set aside in case your car suddenly needs repairs.
Also, I'm sure you will want stuff like a bed (your parents technically purchased yours and may not let you take it).
You'll need stuff like a tool kit and flashlight for emergencies.
Sorry, the apartment does not replace a burned out light bulb - you do. So you will want to be able to afford those, and a step stool to reach the lights.
You'll want plates and silverware atleast.
Start doing the math....can you afford that on $100/wk minus taxes?

$400/wk
Subtract Uncle Sams share of 28%.
$400 per week
times 52 weeks
equals $20,800
minus exemption $3650
minus standard deduction $5700
equals taxable income $11450
--in the 15% tax bracket--
tax on $11450 equals $1299
which works out to 11.3%
for Uncle Sam.
Also pay Colorado State
Income Tax at 4.63%
(did you mean $100/per week, which equals no need to pay Uncle Sam)
Re: Emancipation in the State of Colorado
The poster says $100 per week. So, roughly $400 a month.
Re: Emancipation in the State of Colorado
I just know that no matter what I have ever earned, Uncle Sam likes a nice chunk of it for Federal Taxes, State Income Tax, Social Security/Medicare Tax...
Wanted OP to be prepared for all that.
Even if Uncle Sam takes just 10% in taxes...that will be $360 a month....
